Two Scoops

Had a dream that I interviewed with Chris Hayes for a bartending job at the San Francisco Hilton. He was very impressed with me, and I was all but hired. He then found out that I had quit my job at "ABC 7" the day before, by saying: "The best part about a job at ABC 7 is being able to quit ABC 7". Hayes didn't like that. Like he took it personal somehow and chided me for it even though they were (somehow) the competition. He implied that by quitting there, I broke the freezer. The weird part is Chris Hayes has nothing to do with the hotel bar business, but he is a doppleganger for Mike Knight, who was THE best boss I ever had in the restaurant/bar business, years ago in New Orleans, in real life. Also, IRL, Mike had been arrested at the '68 Democratic Convention in Chicago so, he had his political bonafides, as Chris Hayes does. Chris had been having his hands all over a new-hire waitress and I could tell he had been drinking. I questioned him about that, a...

A Ferrerman Mystery

The younger Gilmore Girl (I'll call her, Rory) rang my doorbell. I'm like a dog with doorbells. They freak me out. I don't bark, but I run around the house looking for my pants because I know, it's probably someone I need to wear pants for. And, of the 100 or so ring tone options on the doorbell, it somehow settled on a very loud, up tempo Jewish tone. Not Hava Nagila. Something snappier. I fucking hate it, but I probably hate them all. Nobody drops in on me except the Gilmore girls, so I guess I got the wireless doorbell for them.  Rory was distressed. Near tears. She began apologizing, not for the intrusion, but for the reason for her ringing. She feared she might have bedbugs and that I might too and that it might be their fault. Rory invited me down to scope out the evidence.  Her and her mom had done their homework on google before consulting me, and it was an either-or proposition of evidence. On her mom's bed, there were black dots that could well be bedbug ...

More Late Movie Reviews

The other  night I watched the film, "Before the Devil Knows You're Dead". It's every bit as good as the 7.3 on the IMDb scale. Because the title is an old Irish blessing, I thought it might be some IRA shit about "the troubles" in Ireland. Nope. A crime and family drama, set in NYC and its suburbs. I recommend it and NOT just because Marisa Tomei has TWO nude scenes in it. I always thought I had a chance with her, by the way. It's an interesting, well-done drama, though sad as can be. When I watch a movie, I like to dissect the characters and their motivations for doing whatever they do. If it's a good film, the director is way ahead of you on that. This one opens with Philip Seymor Hoffman railing Marisa Tomei doggie style. I was not expecting that! It was in the script so, I gather she was. You know, when they film those scenes, there is like a washcloth between the actor's naughty parts so there aren't any accidents. It's pretty bo...

Clickbait: Everything Old IS New Again

There are all these little culture wars going on in the US of A- there always were- but it seems like there are more of them now and each one is clamoring to be THE  stand to take. There is a 'bro culture' and more women subscribe to the 'choose the bear in the woods' trope than you would think (but would they really?). I like to think of these things as metaphors, but they probably aren't and are taken seriously by way too many people. Men and women do not seem to get along too well these days, but did they ever? Jebus Christ- I could tell you stories! In fact, I have! But I never thought that anything that happened to me was a trend, not even for me. I have made bad choices with women. They have made bad choices with me. Sometimes, whether they knew it at the time or not, not choosing the Ferrer was probably the right choice for both of us. I get that. I'm old now and that is the optimum time to 'get' things about one's life. Better late than neve...

Breaking Ground on a New America?

I've been saying for years now that the one good thing that could come out of all this Trump fuckery, is that America and American politics, could get the rebuild it so desperately needs. It might take a civil war and there will  be blood, but if we are to survive another 250 years- or 25- we've got to change our evil ways, baby.  The only thing wrong with the two-party system is that it has been good cop/bad cop for most of our 250 years. I think that's by design. The parties aren't "the same" as many people say, but their similarities aren't much different. Just a look at the campaign donations to each party shows that many of our most evil rich people make donations to both parties. It's not for show, and they aren't merely hedging their bets. It is control. When one is filthy rich, money can mean everything and nothing at the same time. The goal is to get what you want no matter what, no matter the cost.  Well, that's the way it has been. T...

Look For the Labels in Life

Allow me to put my two cents in on the reflecting pool fiasco.  Bottom line: You don't fucking paint granite! Good gawd! One would think that the greatest builder since Adolph Hitler would know this, but we know he's more than a little crazy. Granite is an incredibly hard substrate that can never be prepped for paint. Cover it with a million gallons of water, and you are definitely courting disaster. I have no idea why it was chosen by the original builders of the reflecting pool, but eventually painting it was never a consideration at that time. I know that is true. Why would you?   What was  considered this year was the whim of whackjob president who thought he could make the pool his own, and perhaps put his stupid name on it, whilst making it more reflectible. Failed at that too. The initial photos (before it turned green) showed no difference in reflectibility whatsoever. I've never painted a pool in my life, but I believe the expertise of those who do, who have...

Ugly Cry

My brother passed last Thursday, after a brief, very brutal battle with cancer of the esophagus. People always describe cancer as a battle, but in most cases, it seems like an ass kicking. An unfair fight. One that no one is ever prepared for. Overwhelmed, so many people- no matter how strong they are in healthy life- wind up just lying there and taking it. It doesn't give you much choice, depending upon the stage. You probably know that. Pat entered the hospital on June 1. I drove up to visit on the second. He had lost a lot of weight; how much, he wasn't sure. It turns out they didn't have any scales in the house, so going off his driver's license listing him as 155, it was a good chunk. Knowing that the DMV prefers to reenter basic data as previously entered to move things and people along, I doubted that was accurate. Various DMVs had me for years at the 140 pounds I was at 16 when I first got my DL. Every female DMV employee has seen my eyes as blue. They are haze...

Why Do we fight?

Leave it to Trump to celebrate his 80th birthday with the gift of a UFC fight to Americans- as long as they have a paid subscription to Paramount+. That's not how gifts work amongst normal people. I'm a reasonably normal person and I quit the Paramount last month, but I still have access to it until something like the 17th of June. So, just checking to see if I still had it, I switched from a ballgame and watched two minutes of a birthday boy cage match. It was boring! I've seen better fights on the street. I've been  in better fights myself and I'm putting on no pretenses of me being a skilled brawler. It's just that sometimes in a boy or man's life, you have to fight. Same for girls and women. Sad, but true.  The thing about a street fight is that most of the time, there is a reason for the people to be fighting. They don't like each other. Maybe they are fighting over a girl. Or they are just drunk and stupid. Drunk and stupid is a lot of fights. Peop...

Cold Case Moments

This was partially inspired by rival blogger, Maggie. I don't know if she is my muse or if I'm hers sometimes. 🤷 Today she wrote about growing older. Mostly though it was inspired by a video I saw a few nights ago showing high school pics of beautiful actresses. Having an eye for the ladies, I had to figure I would ace it, like Trump picking out critters. Well, of course I failed miserably. It was tough! Except for Marisa Tomei (whom I always thought I had a chance with...) the contemporaneous beauties were rather plain back in their teen years. This is not  to suggest that they had work done. Not at all. Many of us girls and boys grow into our selves a little later than some others do. That's just facts. It was also inspired by a long ago YouTube I saw of what porn actresses looked like off camera. It was quite shocking even though I had not had carnal knowledge of these actresses, so I did not know their names or the body of their work. They were remarkably plain lookin...

The Collector

Several weeks ago, newly elected NYC mayor, Zohran Mamdani, met with Trump in the Oval Office. I guess it went well and Trump had nothing but nice things to say about him despite his being a socialist, communist, foreigner and all that. I guess people were surprised because Trump is the roughest, toughest, baddest hombre to ever stalk the earth. Why then, did it go so politely?  Well, because Trump's a pussy. He doesn't confront men face to face. You can get punched out for that, and that probably happened in the past and he learned from it. I'm not suggesting violent confrontation is ever a good thing, but when a guy is habitually only vitriolically confronting women, it kind of tells a story about how rough and tumble a guy is not.  I imagine the meeting with Mamdani was designed to have Trump win him over with his reputed charm. This has worked with a vast number of former Trump detractors from Cruz to Rubio and way beyond. Maybe he takes them aside and tells them som...

English Lessons

Maybe it's time I retire this joke: "You may be American in the kitchen, but European in the bathroom".  Nobody gets it! When it was told to me by my Greek friend, Paul, I got it right away! I'm sharp like that, but also immature. So, maybe it's just me that gets it. Paul was probably about the same age as me, but he grew up as a Greek American kid while I grew up as an All-American boy of multi-ethnic background long lost amongst my ancestors. Like most of the Greeks and Slavs I knew, he learned English at school and spoke his parent's tongue at home, translating for them because they were too busy working to make a life for their children to learn English. This is the story of America. Always has been. I think it takes a lot of guts to go to another country and try to make it. It still happens every day. People come from all over the world to be Americans. It isn't easy and they never do it fast enough to please those who think it is easy because they we...

What Are YOU Looking At?

I lost interest in the NBA after Michael Jordan retired for good. Growing up Chicago-adjacent, it was a great time to be a Bulls fan, but with Magic and Bird in their last years too, it just wasn't must see TV for me anymore after they were all gone. I just didn't have basketball in my heart and soul like baseball, and to a lesser extent, football. When the Knicks of New York got into the finals this month, I was only mildly curious. I got a little more curious when Trump reared his ugly head and threatened to ruin it for everyone by making Gane 3 all about him. I went so far as to search my streaming services to see if I could conjure the ABC Network. Truth be told, I was kinda interested in hearing NYC boo Trump live.  You know, I couldn't? I couldn't find ABC anywhere. It's still Channel 7 in Chicago, but I'm not sure anyone can watch it unless they have a package. It's the same with CBS and NBC (2 & 5 in Chicago) All three are offered as local news,...

An End Around

Ah, but the Bluesky is darkening, I hear. One of my favorite blue skiers, Mark Chadbourn, had a post about Bluesky looking to retool and perhaps become more Reddit-like in an attempt to win the coveted, "World's Most Dominant Social Media Platform" title that everybody just gives to Twitter anyways because it was Twitter and was once new and exciting and everybody still calls it Twitter because "X" is just a stupid name. As many commenters pointed out, Twitter is rife with bots and any comparison is tainted by this, like comparing apples to rancid oranges. It is like when Trump declares himself the greatest president- EVER and you just go with that because a) he said it, and 2) he's the president and thousands of bots and real-life idiots believe this to be true, so there you go. It's a bold statement for a sleepy-eyed fat man and the media is not here to pick winners and losers, just make them. Whether you look at social media as a modern town sq...

Fear and Loathing of Women as Policy

As a penis-bearing member of this human race, I find it very disconcerting that republicans in general and this regime in particular, hate women so much. I just don't get it. I'll go out on a limb here (and trust me; I have my own saw, so I don't need any help) but I really don't see much difference between the sexes beyond the obvious physical stuff. I noted the other day that it is our brains that define us, regardless of race, gender, color, creed- whatever. There isn't really a woman's or man's mindset. There is a right and wrong mindset, and it is an equal opportunity employer.  Well, nobody wants to hear that. This is America- pick a fucking side! Well, again, I can't. And I won't! And you can't fucking make me.  There was a post this AM on BS about Trump assembling a panel of 30 men to discuss women's maternity care. I'd link it, but for whatever reason, the link went to a 404 Error, so I can't. But if you have a functioning br...
