Breaking Ground on a New America?
I've been saying for years now that the one good thing that could come out of all this Trump fuckery, is that America and American politics, could get the rebuild it so desperately needs. It might take a civil war and there will be blood, but if we are to survive another 250 years- or 25- we've got to change our evil ways, baby.
The only thing wrong with the two-party system is that it has been good cop/bad cop for most of our 250 years. I think that's by design. The parties aren't "the same" as many people say, but their similarities aren't much different. Just a look at the campaign donations to each party shows that many of our most evil rich people make donations to both parties. It's not for show, and they aren't merely hedging their bets. It is control. When one is filthy rich, money can mean everything and nothing at the same time. The goal is to get what you want no matter what, no matter the cost.
Well, that's the way it has been. The last 46 years since Reagan has brought a concerted effort by billionaire republicans to gain control of the US once and for all. No more good cop; just bad cop. I truly believe that men like Chuck Schumer do not see this. They still believe the game is still the same and that is why they bring strongly worded letters to what is shaping up to be a gunfight. If Chuck cares about people in general and poor people in particular, he continues to go about it in his wrong, old-fashioned way of compromise.
What we need now- more than ever- is leaders who won't compromise. You don't compromise over feeding hungry children as an 'issue'. That should never be open to debate. What I think I'm seeing from these democratic socialist victors in NYC, is people who will not compromise. This frightens republicans and oldline democrats alike. These people are not going to play the game. I love that about them.
Life is about right and wrong. So is politics. If you can distinguish right from wrong; you are likely a democrat. Good for you. If you can't, you are probably a republican. Bad for all. A lot of previously notorious republicans, in and outside of office, are speaking out about Trump and even leaving the party. This seems nice, but I always wonder what made them choose the GOP in the first place. They strike me as either opportunistic or, at best, disingenuous. They always couch with how they disagree with democrats politically still, but...
But what? They never say. Is it the old, "Democrats are tax and spend" bullshit? And republicans are smart shoppers. I guess? It's great that Robert Massie seems to be against Trump and his Epstein Island activities, but just a couple of Christmases ago he was sending out holiday cards with his whole family sporting rifles and handguns. Family values? Merry Fucking Christmas, eh?
I really have a problem with anyone who wasn't against Trump from the start. I suspect leadership in both parties recognized he was an idiot, but politics being a game and a living to them, they were certain they could benefit from him. It's the political equivalent of the tiresome trope about women choosing the bear. They can't see they are dead either way?
At its core, whether you want to argue the US is a republic or a democracy, congresspersons, senators AND the president are supposed to represent all the people. All we the people do is vote them into the game. Once elected, they represent whoever tips them the most. We pay their salaries, but like waitressing, the big money is in tips. You take care of your best customers. We the people are not their best customers- until reelection rolls around. BTW, the denotations of the words, republic and democracy, are lost on most people. There's very little difference between the two in practice. Most people go with the connotations being "republican" and "democrat" and make their political stand there. They are as lost as they are in conflating "socialism" and "communism" to be the same thing. Republicans certainly relish that confusion and work it to their advantage.
That is why the democratic socialist victories in NYC could possibly be short-lived. Even some democrats hear "socialist" and get scared. They think "communist" too. Regular people are basically good, but they also tend to be basically stupid. They hear things like "free lunch" and "fair housing", but they are told to believe that those things are socialist/communist and therefore bad. How are we going to pay for that??!! Well, with taxes. Just like the Trump regime pays for EVERYTHING. Trump wants Swedes and Norwegians to emigrate to America. This is solely because they are white, blonde haired and blue-eyed. They do not want to come here though, because they lead good, democratic socialist lives at home. Why give that up? We gave it up and look at what a shithole country we have become.
There is a lot to look forward to, I like to think. Trump gets worse every day and helps build the coalition of young people against him. This is why Mamdani and the others have prevailed in Americas largest city. They are gaining ground elsewhere in the country too because the young people see the problem with the system, not just Trump. The system gave us Trump. That never should have happened. The system sucks at thwarting him. Why, it's almost as if the system wants him...
