Blowing Hot Air

Though my name isn't Luca, I live on the second floor. Because of that location, I have access to the attic here. The ceilings are low and I'm tall, so I reached up to pop the access panel and replace it with a screen in the interest of science and maybe utility savings. The screen would keep birds and bats out of my apartment. Probably wouldn't happen, but why find out? The landlord and I posited that in the summer the opening might be a sort of 'chimney' allowing warm air to escape naturally up and out of my place. The theory is that warm air rises and cooler, dense air doesn't. It's not just a theory it's true, so don't fight me on this. You will lose. Or will you?

We are in another round of 90 degree days, and I've had the access open for a few, but really could not see any difference in cooling. Well, until last night. Though the sun was long gone, the heat was beating down. This area is a busy little intersection I frequent on my way to the kitchen for coffee and beer, as well as the bathroom and master bedroom on either side of that. So, I pass there a lot. I had never felt it so warm this summer or last. Well, fuck that. I made the command decision to take the screen out and put the panel back in. I don't know what changed from the other hot days or nights, but I didn't like it. A pretty good, quick change ensued.

I had lived a summer in a large room in a decrepit, once proud New Orleans, Lower Garden District Mansion that I think had 14' ceilings. Maybe 12, but they were up there. That's the way they built them back in the day before air conditioning, especially in the hot damn south. It could have been worse and the high ceilings made it better. The tradeoff can be heated air being wasted up high in the winter, but you don't get much winter in NOLA. Not for long. Not a big deal.

One winter in Memphis we were doing a warehouse, probably covering sprinkler heads for when we'd later spray the deck. None of the 20 or so garage doors were installed yet, so we were open to the elements. Me and a buddy were up 20 some feet on a platform lift. I watched the other trades scurrying around like rats down below, all bundled up from the cold. Me and whoever were in shirtsleeves, warmed by the escaping body heat of the tribes below. It was odd, but that's science, Mr. White! I don't know why my climate here changed after a few days, but I'd have to think that 7' ceilings just don't offer enough room to make a difference, at least in cooling. I've got no complaints in the winter when the uniform of the day is boxers and a t-shirt- just like summer. Weird. Utilities are reasonable either season. 🤷
