Most of Life is Just Showing Up
There are threats against presidents and other elected officials all the time. Most are easily dismissed when the Secret Service visits the person and they determine the person is unserious or totally incapable of carrying out whatever their threat might have been. It's usually somebody talking shit, with no terrorist or political ties.
But what if they learned of a credible one, with a fit, educated, potential bad actor, with actual intent and desire? Could they keep such a person on a long leash if they might be able to use him for political purposes with no risk of them succeeding?
Crime-fighting includes stealth and undercover agents infiltrating criminal organizations at every level, from the feds on down to your local cops. It even- according to Trump's ridiculous DOJ- might include The Southern Poverty Law Center (a non-profit Civil Rights organization) because they allegedly used paid informants to infiltrate the Klan and other evil entities to keep an eye on them. I'm sure they did. That's good work. That current DOJ chucklefucks view this action as "supporting terrorism" rather than fighting it, may blow the doors off every past undercover operation ever performed in the US. They might have to totally redo the "Donnie Brasco" movie! Agent Joe Pistone was corrupting the New York mob! He was supporting them- NOT busting them! This regime can't think anything through.
But maybe they tried to think this WHCD shooter through, just not very well.
Through sources, you get a line on a guy who has a beef with the administration. This guy is young, fit and educated. He's not some drunk mouthing off in a bar or a loudmouth on the internet. Those people aren't reliable They're just talking shit. This guy, if you let him roam a bit, might actually do what he's talking about. Maybe the feds could guide him a little, if necessary.
As long as control is maintained, as long as you keep him from getting close to the target(s), you've got yourself a rather plausible scenario where no one gets hurt, but you'll get the ballroom you need so desperately.
Was this all about securing taxpayer funding for an egotesticle's vanity project? Why not? This regime is one stunt after another in pursuit of money. Tariffs, war with Iran- nothing is too ridiculous when you control the narrative and BIGLY profits are to be had. Private funding for the ballroom/bunker had already been secured to the tune of $300+ million dollars. What was lacking was the go ahead for the project. They needed an obvious impetus, and the support of (some) of "the people" to blow by the powers that be who were against this project. Within minutes of the WHCD incident, every pundit on the payroll was saying the same thing: "THIS is why we need the ballroom!" They would not have reached that immediate conclusion if this had happened to Biden or Barack Obama. For them, pundits would have called for bulletproof backpacks and that they only make appearances in buildings with one door.
So, you have a guy who probably really wants to do some damage, and you keep him on a leash. He gets a room in the Hilton. He's got a shotgun and .38 caliber pistol and some knives. These aren't optimal for doing the damage he wrote about in his manifesto, but like Rumsfeld said, you go to war with what you got. That he had no full or semiautomatic weapons was actually a blessing for all concerned. Shotguns are nasty, but not a first choice for such a solo assault. It's doubtful he even got a shot off. The only victim in this action was an SS agent who took a pistol round in his bulletproof vest. That was quite likely friendly fire. If you were on a suicide mission, would you switch from a shotgun to a pistol for any reason at the beginning of your assault? No. The pistol is there for a last resort when you are cornered and about to be caught...
Unlike the theatrical hoax in Butler, Pennsylvania, where Trump needed to look heroic and blessed by God, vaingloriously standing tall amongst the crowd of SS agents, defiantly imploring his people to FIGHT! FIGHT! FIGHT", all they needed that evening at The Hilton was for this random, lone gunman to show up. They would take care of the rest. He would never get near any target of consequence. It would count as an assassination attempt, and they would get the ballroom/bunker.
Stupid? Oh, you bet your ass it is! But with Forrest Trump, stupid is as stupid does.
