Once Upon a Prime Suspect
Found another very good network show that fell victim to poor ratings. "Prime Suspect", starring the lovely and talented Maria Bello, lasted one season on NBC, back in 2011. I don't recall if I ever saw even an episode back then- maybe- as I am longtime fan of Maria Bello. She's a crush- OK??!! She's NOT my girlfriend! Yeesh!
Anyway, perhaps viewers saw it (or didn't see it) as typical gritty NYPD cop drama. IMDb critics gave it a 7.3 on their Richter scale and I would go along with that rank myself. The show had an excellent cast including names you may have heard of like Kirk Acevedo, Brian F. O'Byrne and Aidan Quinn, along with familiar unknown faces as supporting cast. Acting truly is a team effort, and all involved put in the necessary good work each episode. It is always a pleasure to see good actors plying their craft. No one drags the show down.
Detective Jane Timoney doesn't have the usual TV cop baggage of a drug or drinking problem, or a bunch of ex-wives. She drinks hard, but her baggage is only that she slept with a superior and that may or may not have advanced her career. That's different. The male homicide dicks are dicks about that, so there is immediate conflict. As one high-ranking cop says later in defense of Timoney, "You show me a cop who says he hasn't slept with another cop, and I'll show you a liar!" This tracks. Most people meet spouses and lovers at work, (see: my ex-wife) and it would follow that cops follow that route too. And given that police departments are decidedly male, it would also allow for a lot of homosexuality. But that's not what the cop was going for in his observation. That's just me dealing on cops because they can be difficult dicks with us civilians at times. Don't we all know that? It's just that when men and women work together, they become boys and girls.
Timoney is tough and jaded- as all cops should be- but she is a woman and those feminine qualities are bound to come out. If, for example, you think women are too emotional to be president, you have totally missed what a delicate, whiny bitch Trump is, and you are beyond stupid. If you can't see the bold strength in Hillary Clinton or Kamala Harris, you deserve to find your strength in guys like Trump and Lindsey Graham, you fucking Mark Wayne Mullinhead! To me, the beauty of Timoney is that she doesn't act like she's got a dick. I wish more *strong*women in real life were that way. We've got enough bad male role models in life without women trying to enter that manly realm.
Anyways, it's a good, gritty, fast moving cop drama. I can't see why it failed other than perhaps a poor timeslot or weaselly network executives. The exec's are always hung up on ratings and quality be damned. How anything truly good gets made in TV then or now seems to be a coinflip. I'll finish streaming its 13th and final episode tonight (on Peacock, but also available on Amazon) and I'll be left wanting more, like "Life". Isn't that just like "Life" and life in general? You want more, but some people in life just can't or won't deliver.
Yep. I see it all the time where a woman feels she has to be a classless dick, to lose her womanhood in order to belong or be accepted. I see it a lot with female comedians where they are crude and crass. I got a Roku, so I can get into the 21st century!
ReplyDeleteRoku is good! I got it last year so I could get Marquee to get Cubs games (which reminds me that I better get busy getting that again) and it's been very good at accessing other stuff.
