The Americans. Maybe...
I'm no fucking rat, but I got a line on some very clever immigrants that seem to have escaped the scrutiny of our ICEhole storm troopers. I'm not really worried about them getting busted because I don't think ICE reads and like a lot of stupid people, they don't read this blog. For that reason, I'm going to go ahead and out them here and because their skills in blending into America are so excellent! I mean- they fooled a Ferrerman. That's not supposed to happen.
First one is Gerran Howell. He plays young doctor, Dennis Whitaker from Oklahoma on HBO's "The Pitt". He does a fine job, even finer when you discover that the little scamp is WELSH! That's a country in the United Kingdom called Wales. I never would have guessed or been the least bit suspicious until I saw an interview clip of him on IMDb, speaking in his native voice.
Second up (also from The Pitt) is Shabana Azeez. OK, now the name is not the big tip off you might think it is. I was guessing that she's Indian American since she's playing an American of Indian descent, Dr. Victoria Javadi. She's beautiful and has THE most expressive eyes, not seen since the cartoon character, Betty Boop. Well, this trickster is AUSTRALIAN! I was not expecting that! Learned this in the same IMDb interview.
This fakery is not limited to The Pitt and it also goes both ways across the pond, though the usual route is one of the worlds coming to America to impersonate Americans. This is because we're the greatest, right! Well, not if you read this morning's blogpost... But let's get past that and let me out the Russian guy in "Heated Rivalry". Well, not 'out' because I think that already happened in the show, as it's kinda the premise, but 'out' in revealing that the character Ilya Rozanov is played by a good ol' boy, born and raised in Odessa, TEXAS! His name is Connor Storrie and I believed he was Russian. I really did. I only watched the first episode. I like hockey, but the gay stuff doesn't interest me. Not that there's anything wrong with that. It's just not for me. Now, lesbians- I got a little chubby last night while watching "Ponies" (on Peacock) and one of the characters went at it with a Russian gal. I find attractive lesbians very relatable. We have the same tastes, I guess. BTW, that's a very good show. It's fun and quirky. Of the two female leads, only one is pretending to be American. Emilia Clark is a Brit (of course) and Haley Lu Richardson is from Phoenix, Arizona. The show is set in Moscow in the late 70's so, a whole slew of Eastern Europeans fills up the rest of the cast playing Russians. No surprises there. Oh- and the other guy in Heated Rivalry is Canadian, but we're used to Canadians infiltrating our film and television. They are basically us, but with common decency and better healthcare.
Now, as to why this is happening and why folks from outside the US are so very good at playing Americans, I can answer that. They do their homework! They study our films and TV shows a lot more than we study theirs. They dream of coming to Hollywood and making it just like we may do. Just like all immigrants, they have to work harder at it than we do. Good gawd, they learn the language well! I love being duped by a good performance. It seems to me that is what acting is all about. We should welcome all races and ethnicities, regardless of acting skills. Just be good people whoever you are, wherever you are. And don't take us too seriously because we're not all that all the time. Maybe we could take lessons in how to be better Americans?
