Let Your Freak Flag Fly!
Saw a rerun of a spirited debate that a collection of high school students in Kansas engaged in, some five years ago. The kids were polite and smart- even the kids that were wrong were impressive. The debate was about flying the Confederate battle flag, and the issues of slavery as a cause of the war. I'd have to say that, under the first Amendment, one does have a right to display that flag. I personally see nothing wrong with displaying the Confederate battle flag or even the Nazi swastika, Or a Trump flag.
Flags show the public where one's allegiances lie. You fly the swastika, I know you're a Nazi asshole. You can't be anything else if you do that. Same with the stars and bars. That tells me that this flag-waver is a racist secessionist. A trump flag announces that you love and support a fucking moron, in anything he does. As awful as these allegiances are, it is best to keep them out in the open so that there is no mistake made about where these people's assholery fits into everyday American life. It shows people that: "I support making war on the dang gubmint and enslaving people". Or "I support a holocaust". And "I support a whiny bitch's effort to destroy democracy". Go ahead and tell us like you think it is.
The thing is, even if you don't necessarily support those things, you support the people who do if you fly their flag. Doesn't matter if you didn't read the fine print, you signed off on it. We the rest of the people should know about that so there aren't any surprises down the road. You don't want to find out that your minister is a trumper as he's beating you with a club in a concentration camp. A little late by then.
When I was in the sixth grade, a lot of us boys would rather mindlessly draw swastikas and rebel flags on things. Why did we do this? Well...sixth grade. We were a bunch of knuckleheads. Most outgrew it. We were rebels who didn't really have a cause or a clue. We were trumpers before it was cool. Though Trump flags hadn't been invented yet, we saw the other two as tough and cool. We knew they inspired fear and strength- even though we acknowledged they were loser flags.
Some people peak in the sixth grade, but not yours truly. A lot of people say Donald Trump reads and speaks at a fourth-grade level. They may be right, but I'll give him sixth to be kind. Louisiana Senator, Wrong John Kennedy, is a Rhodes Scholar who studied at Oxford- the one in England, not Mississippi. He looks and sounds like granny Clampett, but he's educated. However, education doesn't matter when you can't handle the fundamentals of life. If you can't- or won't- acknowledge or distinguish right from wrong, that dog don't hunt. It's as simple as that. And we the people should know about it.
Book smart means nothing. The brightest students can be dumb as bricks when it comes to real life. I was really surprised to see the number of Trump bootlickers who went to prestigious colleges. Taking a walk around the hood I see the Trump flags. Yeah, good to know who my neighbors are.
