You Can't Beat It
When I'm not watching hockey fights on YouTube, my go to for REELS is women's college softball. The REELS are usually set to John Fogartey's "Put Me in Coach" (which fits like a glove) or Michael Jackson's "Billie Jean" and "Beat It" which doesn't fit but has a good beat and is easy to dance to- at least for him. The REELS are short, but they include dancing in with the exceptional plays. Yeah, I like the dancing, but these ladies play damn good baseball. They know what they're doing. They know how to play the game. It's a smaller field than MLB, of course; 60' between the bases (compared to 90') and the pitcher's mound isn't a mound at all, but a flat circle of dirt, 35-43' from home plate. This is fast pitch underhand of an 11" softball, reaching speeds up to 77mph. Life does come at you fast!
The players tend to be very attractive, fit women whom you might look at and think, "Oh, she could be a cheerleader!" Well, check yourself there. You need to look at cheerleaders and say, "Oh, she could play softball or volleyball!" Women's sports are rapidly expanding in the US. It's growing so fast that republicans have invented a fantasy scenario where men are willing to undergo sex changes in desperate attempts to dominate women's sports. The women are dominating on their own, thank you very much, and do not need men's help in this matter, at all. I don't want to get too deep into that idiotic republican bullshit, but no failed male ballplayer on earth is good enough to pretend to be female (much less go all the way) to dominate a woman's league. The very notion is a jackleg, ridiculous, overtly politicized attempt to discredit women in general and women's sports in particular. Nor do I want to disparage cheerleaders. It's that I have long felt that more girls should maybe channel the obvious skill and athleticism it takes to be a cheerleader, into a sport- any sport. It's great that it's more of an option now than it was in the 20th century when I was in high school.
Now, full disclosure, I've never seen a live, woman's game- just the REELS and a bit on TV. Any sport looks exciting if it's all highlights. However, the highlights I see show a ton of skill and enthusiasm for the game. VERY competitive. They slide and do not mind getting dirty. They play with passion. And they dance!
