Life is Hard for the Stupid. You've Got That Right!
If you have been anywhere near the internet the last 20 years, you may know that it has been beaten into our heads that the only thing protecting us from a tyrannical government is our right to bear arms. The government should fear the people- not vice versa- and the people have the right to rise up against the dang gubmint, anytime it what gets too big fer its britches. Dang gubmint get what for! Fuck around and find out!
A little crude and hard to follow, but that's basically the intent behind a billion posts on gun rights over the last twenty years or so. "We have to protect ourselves from a tyrannical government! It's a God-given, sacred right also given to us by the Founders in all their wisdom and glory! It is THE law that protects ALL the other laws! Pretty neat, eh? No other country in the world has a God-given right to defend itself, but the US. We're pretty special in that regard!
Here's the text of the Second Amendment, in its entirety. Here we go: A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.
Pretty simple. I don't know if it was doing a lot of heavy lifting at the time, but this century that simple statement is clumsily juggling a lot of balls that are mostly hitting the ground only to be continually picked up again and again. I don't want to argue the 2A with anybody. Talk about a fool's errand! Jesus and the other Founders could come back from the dead today and set everyone straight on what they meant and they'd be wrong. In fact, if the founders came back today, they'd be asking about Jesus, "What is he doing here? We didn't even mention him once!"
That's true. A lot of people have taken a lot of liberties with the intent and interpretation of all the amendments to the Constitution over the years. This is why we have a USSC to review and analyze the Constitution and laws derived from it, as the country evolves (or devolves) over the years. It's not just to protect Trump and other pedophiles even though it does seem like it. Our laws are based on a lot of compromise, sometimes for purpose of convenience, and from the founding have been a little tricky. For example, "all men are created equal". Well, it turns out that meant all white men and that that was with a wink and a nod itself. It didn't mean black men, and it didn't mean women of ANY color. It took the Supreme Court a very long time to sort that shit out!
Fuck if I want to get into all that. Life and politics today are nothing better than a live-action Facebook 'debate' where 'right v. wrong' is hanging by a thread, in danger of being overturned by the court of public opinion which is actually now the highest court in the land, and not much better or worse than the boys and women in robes. This is the time of stupid and don't fight me on that. I will fuck you up.
Nothing though, is stupider than the now busted notion that the guns will protect us from tyranny. They will not. Maybe someday, but as it stands now the gun rights crowd is sitting out any challenging of any government tyranny because they rather fancy it. There's comfort in tyranny. They approve of armed men driving around major cities looking for men and women of brown persuasion who might not be legal citizens. They want these people corralled in the worst possible way and they are going about it in the worst possible way; by going about it without warrant or due process according to the law. There should at least be a paper trail of who did what and why. You would expect that in what is perceived as the "greatest country in the world". You would think this would be "USA 101", but you'd be wrong. You would expect "accountability" but we will probably be told any moment now that that is a made-up word, like "affordability". A communist word perhaps?
Whatever the Second Amendment was written for, back in the day, it has long been the refuge of cowards and scoundrels. The first fucking time we get a tyrannical gubmint, these bitches stand down and cheerfully yield to tyranny. They give in without a fight. People being hunted down, cuffed- maybe killed- and disappeared into prisons with not even a hint of due process? These guys are OK with that, in this land of the free. They were lucky enough to be born here and, thus, have a birthright to citizenship-
Wait. If those people's rights are so tenuous, who ensures mine? I don't think it's the good old boys with the guns. They talk a lot of shit is all. I think their perception of my rights is 180 degrees from my perception and that of the founders, Thing is, theirs are too. They just have no idea that doing unto others can be done unto them. Or that standing by doing nothing while the rights of others are trampled is not at all a good thing to do.
