I Can't Quit You: Part II, Maybe III?
As has been well documented in this space, I have a lot of trouble with streaming services, mostly with quitting them. Recently I was getting phone texts from HBO/Max about their being a *problem* with my payment method. Since my bank makes those payments and there had never been a misstep from them before, I figured this was a third-party scam or the (alleged) problem was that they wanted to charge me more and the bank wasn't cooperating with that. Not liking either scenario, I opted to ignore. Season II of "The Pitt" is over until next January and I had recently completed my umpteenth bingeing of "The Sopranos". The other HBO attraction, John Oliver's "Last Week Tonight" is available quickly enough on YouTube. I don't really need HBO until next year. So, they warned me and I dallied. And I lost it. No biggee.
I found out it was gone when I went to finish up a short-lived, 8-episode series from HBO called "Duster". Set in the '70's it starred a 1970 Dodge Duster and some actor that looked like Fabio, as the car's owner. He drove for Keith David who was an Arizona crime boss. It was a cute show. I like the old cars and even the ridiculous fashions of the time I believe was THE best time to be young. I'm not terribly heartbroken about not being able to finish the series, because I suspect it got cancelled for lack of ratings. I doubt there was any closure to it because of this network decision. Sometimes things just end. 🤷
But ya know, sometimes simply not paying is the best way to break up with a streaming service. That really gets their attention! I thought I had quit Paramount+ last month because my Roku device told me that I could easily cancel through them. They were wrong about that. Or I was. I dunno. The bank is still paying them every month. It's like $8.99 which isn't much, but CBS/Paramount kinda sucks on every level. I got it for football. Without football it's just "Survivor" and a bunch of neo-conservative shows about heroic cops that I don't really care about. Plus, the way they have slow walked Stephen Colbert to appease our president, Sodamn Insane, is just ridiculous. I admit to enjoying "Landman", but I have no idea if it is ever coming back. I don't really care, but it is a fun watch that doesn't take itself too seriously, despite people thinking it does.
This all brings me back to a post I made a year or so ago where I quite righteously came to the conclusion that I'm pretty damn happy with the free TV available to me (Pluto and Tubi) because, though they have commercials, they still include all the swears and nudity that the director intended in their films. I'm a purist, you know. I will NOT apologize for loving me some naked women! I'm a fan. Until football season rolls around, I'll be fine without pricey streaming. I'll make do.
